Provenance
Mask Muyombo from the Pende culture of southeastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Traditionally worn horizontally atop the head during initiation ceremonies, the mask features a prominent chin extension symbolizing a beard—an emblem of authority and wisdom. Muyombo masks were believed to promote fertility and communal well-being.
This polychrome example stands out for the balanced composition of its carving. The finely executed beard is accentuated with red ochre and kaolin. The eyes, framed by boldly arched brows, convey determination, reverence, and calm.
