Description
The Collective on Calton Hill brings people together to look at, think about and produce contemporary art in a new kind of city observatory.
Established in 1984, Collective has long supported new work by artists who are at a pivotal stage in their development. In November 2018, we opened our new home on Calton Hill, featuring the restored City Observatory, City Dome, and a purpose-built exhibition space.
The City Observatory is the birthplace of astronomy and timekeeping in Edinburgh. Within the walled grounds of Collective sits a collection of buildings including the City Observatory - designed by William Henry Playfair in 1818- the Transit House, City Dome, Observatory House and Playfair Monument. The City Observatory stands in the centre, a temple to scientific innovation and discovery.
The site forms a vital component in the group of buildings on Calton Hill, which are central to the UNESCO World Heritage Site and both architecturally and culturally significant to the history of Edinburgh and Scotland.
On the Site is the acclaimed panoramic restaurant - The Lookout by Gardener’s Cottage – offers top quality seasonal cooking using local produce and the best views in Edinburgh.
The prize is a private behind the scenes guided tour of the City Observatory, its telescopes, history and current art exhibits with Collective’s Director Kate Gray, followed by lunch for two at The Lookout restaurant.
Due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, Collective and the Lookout are currently closed but the offer will be available to be used up until Summer 2021 when the spaces have re-opened on a date mutually agreed between the bidder and the representatives of the site.
