worked in silk and linen threads, depicting a scrolling border of strawberries and stylised flowers, above a central motto with paternal and maternal family initials, flanked by coronets and bearing the names 'ALEXANDER HOPE' and 'MARGARET COCKBURN', signed 'ANN LYON HOPE SEWED THIS SAMPLER WITH MRS ANDERSON 1833'; over a further band with baskets, flowering urns, trees, and peacocks, above a depiction of Inverary [sic] Castle, flanked by a landscape scene of pine trees, birds and animals, in a period rosewood frame
