the rectangular tray top with a squared handle, the frieze inlaid with a continuous inscription, 'ALEXANDRA/ TO. CH. KNOLLS/ SANDRINGHAM/ CHRISTMAS .1899' over a lower tier tray raised and divided by slender square supports ending on slighly splayed feet

Note: Sandringham's 'Technical School of Woodwork' was established by Princess Alexandra, later Queen Alexandra following her marriage in 1863 to Edward, Prince of Wales. Originally established for the children of Estate workers, it later became Her Majesty Queen Mary's 'Carving School' for ex-servicemen and local workers.
Provenance: Probably gifted from Princess Alexandra to the Honourable Charlotte Knollys (c. 1835-1930), Lady in Waiting to Queen Alexandra, sister of Francis, Lord Knollys. A later, but related, marquetry version of this table from The Collection of H.R.H The Princess Margaret was sold, Christie's, London, 14 June 2006, lot 561, and another in satinwood, Christie's, London, 15 June 2000, lot 11. Catalogued as 'fruit tables', they differ slightly in form but follow the same general configuration, indicating the present lot may have been an antecedent.
