Note: The Moyana was the winner of the first Tall Ships race in 1956. Disaster struck on the way back to Southampton, however, when Moyana got into difficulties in a storm and sank. All 23 officers and crew were taken off safely and they even had the prescence of mind to take their winning trophy with them.
The Tall Ships race was first suggested in 1953 when Bernard Morgan had the idea of an international race for sail training ships, manned by crews drawn from cadets and seamen under training to bring together the youth of the world's seafaring people in friendly competion. The idea found favour with the Portuguese Ambassador to the U.K. Dr.Pedro Pereira and together with the support of many including Earl Mountbatten, the First Sea Lord, and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh the first race took place between Torbay in the U.K. and Lisbon in Portugal.
