Footnote
Provenance: By repute removed from the church of Santiago, Carmona, Seville in the late 19th century.
Note: It is thought that these ceiling tiles were some of 2,000 pieces uncovered behind existing decoration to the church ceiling in the late 19th century. The tiles were then removed, and auctioned or sold as they disseminated throughout Europe and made their way into important collections including the V&A, the Cluny Museum and even into the hands of the King of Portugal. Examples also exist in the National Museum of Scotland and the museum of Cologne.
A similar grouping of Spanish arista tiles were sold by Lyon & Turnbull, September 2017, lots 407-412.
