Footnote
The unique mechanism of this dining table is attributed to a table made for Henry Frederick, Duke of Cumberland, 4th son of Frederick, Prince of Wales and brother of George III. A patron of the prominent furniture-maker and designer John Linnell, it's possible the Duke was the first recipient of a table of this design which was adapted so that the legs support the weight of the table without obstructing the sitters.
