Footnote
The family believes that this work was given to their ancestors by the Prince of Wales (later known as King Edward VII). Their ancestor, who was the Crown Agent at the time, went to Balmoral to arrange the acquisition of Abergeldie Castle as a summer residence for the Prince of Wales and Princess Alexandra of Wales.
While at Abergeldie House, the Crown Agent commented on a portrait, noting that the sitter was a relative of his. The Prince asked if he would like the portrait, but he replied, “No, Sir, I think he looks best on his ancestral walls.”
Later, this oil painting was sent by the Prince as a gift instead.
