the rounded rectangular top with a green leather gilt-tooled insert writing surface, above three short frieze drawers with dummy drawers on the reverse, raised on turned and tapered reeded legs ending in brass caps and castors, the interior of the centre drawer stamped ‘101 WARDOUR STREET/ SOHO LONDON’

James Winter founded his company in 1823 as a cabinet maker, undertaker, dealer, appraiser and specialised as a restorer of second hand and antique furniture to retail in his Soho premises. His sons joined his firm and then the business was renamed James Winter & Sons, 101 Wardour St., Soho, London. The firm expanded out of 101 Wardour Street in 1840, surviving until 1870 when it was operating from 151, 153 and 155 Wardour Street (The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, p. 992-3 and C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 47 and figs. 1016 - 25).
