Paul Dubois created this sculpture along with three others to adorn the tomb of General Jucault de Lamoriciére (1806-65) in Nantes Cathedral. It was inspired by the tomb of Lorenzo de Medici in Florence, a work by Michelangelo, which Dubois was able to visit during his studies in the city. The other figures were emblematic of Charity, Meditation, and Faith, with each positioned at a corner of the tomb
