Description
the case by Nicolas Jean Marchand, by the gilt dial with white enamel Roman numerals cartouche plaques, with an outer ring of Arabic five minute markers plaques, the waisted case in tortoiseshell première and contre partie Boulle, surmounted by a gilt metal figure of Apollo slaying the serpent Python, with gilt metal mounts, the door with a figure of Eros seated on a lion playing a lyre, the interior with a sloped parquetry panel, raised on bracket feet cast with beast heads and exotically dressed male masks, the back door stamped ‘Marchand’ to the centre, on a conforming tapered boulle marquetry bracket with finely cast mask mounts, the later fitted early 19th century English twin train chain fusee movement with anchor escapement by Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy (1780-1854), signed ‘Vulliamy, London, 779’, with a matching number pendulum

Nicolas Jean Marchand became a Maitre Ebeniste in 1738, established in rue Saint-Nicolas. He mainly produced good quality ormolu-mounted lacquer commodes as well as clock-cases.
