Footnote
The present clock bares strong similarities to the work of the London clockmaker Walter Mitchelson, recorded as working in 3 Helmet Row, London, circa 1775-1800 (Clockmakers of the World, Brian Loomes, p.544). There are some notable comparisons to bracket clocks recently offered on the market signed by this maker. One clock had near identical brass inlaid stop fluted canted angles to the sides of the case and very similar style to the fine pierced brass sound fret panels above the dial (George III mahogany chiming bracket clock signed Walter Mitchelson, Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood, Exeter, 13 Jul 2022, lot 1976). The movements of several other clocks were also of very similar construction, one with a very similar repeating semi-circular engraved border to the backplate (George III mahogany bracket clock signed Walter Mitchelson, Hutchinson Scott, Skipton, 17 Oct 2023, lot 1085). Another again had a similarly engraved border to the backplate and also a similarly proportioned spire surmounting the case (George III mahogany bracket clock signed Walter Mitchelson, Tring Market Auctions, Tring, 17th Jun 2022, lot 21).
