Footnote
According to the ‘Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery 1780-1880’ volume 1, by Coysh & Henrywood, the scene is based on a watercolour entitled ‘Swarm of Bees, Autumn’, by George Robertson (1742-88). The original is in the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, Bedford. The wares are commonly attributed to William Adams but no marked examples have been recorded.
