Note: Gemito produced this sculpture when studying antique sculpture in the Naples museum in the 1880's, where he was directly influenced by the antique bronze of Narcissus, found in Pompeii in 1862. Another example of this model was sold at Sotheby's, London, 19th and 20th Century Sculpture, 9 December 2020, lot 1, cast by Fonderia Gemito of Naples, signed and dated 1886. The Museo Diego Aragona Pignatelli Cortes in Naples also has another cast dated the same year.
