Note: Broughty Castle has a very long history. The site may first have been fortified in 1454 when the fourth Earl of Angus received permission to build there. The castle then changed hands several times and the tower was probably finished in 1496 by the second Lord Gray. It later played an important part in the wars with England in the 1540's and a ditch was dug across the landward side of the promontory by the English garrison in 1547. By the end of the eighteenth century Broughty Castle was an abandoned ruin although in the mid-nineteenth century it was again fortified to defend against the Russians, French and Germans respectively.
