worked in silk on linen, the first by Ruth Piercy, dated 1735, with alphabet and number series, poem lines 'Close in they bosom lock up thy intents/ for he that knows thy purpose best prevents' and 'Endeavour in Excel/ other in doing Well', above a field with trees, baskets, and dogs , framed; and a text sampler worked by Martha Bolton, dated 1742, with prayer 'The Collect/ Lord of all power and might who art the/ author and giver of all good things, Craft in/ our hearts the love of thy Name, increase/ in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness/ and of thy great mercy keep us in the same/ through jesus christ our Lord, Amen' with crowns, lions, and a flower pot, framed
