Note:Miss Robina Spencer, later Mrs Oliphant, was the sister of Anne Spencer whose portrait was sold in these rooms on 24th May 2002, Lot 91 for £47,000

This portrait was painted at 7 Woodside Place in the west end of Glasgow, where Guthrie had a studio built behind.".....a spacious room pleasantly proportioned and well lighted in a way easily controlled it gave him much pleasure to paint there. But the building took a considerable time... and settling into the new house and studio early in 1891 the full lengths of the two Miss Spencer were begun."
