Provenance:Dr Helen D Megaw and by descent. Dr Megaw was a distinguished cystallographer who attended the Fifth International Union of Crystallography held in Cambridge in 1960. Escher was a guest speaker there and also held a small exhibition. Dr Megaw was greatly impressed by Escher's work and subsequently visited him at his studio in Baarn, Netherlands where she purchased the following four lots.In 1973 she published a book entitled 'Crystal Structures - A Working Approach' in which she uses one of Escher's works to illustrate a proposition.
