Literature:Kenneth McConkey, Sir John Lavery, 1993, p.23, 'The final picture shown in Glasgow in 1883 was a painting of a model in a studio, entitled, Between the sittings. It shows the now familiar model for A conquest, with the picture itself resting against the wall in the background. Divested of studio props, this painting reveals a more natural Lavery, but this is not to suggest that it did not have its own specialist market. It is easy to think of the painter turning to such diversions in a mood of relaxation and his personal preference for this kind of intimist theme remained long after the grand artifice of his early attempts at literature and history had vanished.
