Note:W & J Lockett was founded in 1824 as a firm of merchant traders mainly of French wine and brandy.They became ship owners in 1837 and overseas trading prospered particularly on the west coast of South America. During the American Civil War they carried cotton to Liverpool and subsequently sugar from Peru and nitrates from Chile. The Firm retained estates in Chile until 1962 and continued trading until 1971 as wine and spirit importers.
