signed by Tomasso Saulini Rome, the oval cameo with right facing portrait, signed behind head, in collet set gold frame with rope and ribbon tied border, the reverse engraved 'Claude Bowes Lyon' and 'Rome 1854'

Note: Claude Bowes-Lyon (21st July 1824 - 16th February 1904), 13th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, he married Frances Dora Smith 28th September 1853, their eldest son Claude Bowes-Lyon, 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, was the father of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, later Queen Elizabeth, wife of King George VI.
Tomasso and Luigi were brothers who were gem carvers in Rome c.1836 to about 1860. Their work was primarily of classical form but commissions such as this are recorded.
