Description
Moscow 1885, maker A.K, of triangular and hexagonal form, the salt with three floral champleve decorated panels, and the other three with a traditional Russian quote, translating as "Bread and salt are the soul of any conversation" supported on a spool support with open bracket supports, slight concave triangular base with three niches, two with Russian male head the other with a Russian lady, all on scrolling corbel supports and feet

This proverb was often (and still is) inscribed on salt shakers, bread bowls, dishes, etc. and it means that bread and salt (symbols of giving strangers a warm welcome, an old Russian custom) will make your guests feel at home. It reflects Russian traditions of hospitality.
