Footnote
In mineralogy, spinel classifies a whole group of related minerals, of which only a few are gem quality. The origin of the name is uncertain, possibly derived from the Greek word for spark or Latin for thorn. Gem quality spinel occurs in all colours, the most highly prized being a ruby-like red as in this lot. It is also quite rare to find gem quality spinel of this size.
