Footnote
Footnote: This is a rare survival of Elgin gold. There is only one other piece of recorded Elgin gold which is struck with maker's mark only for Thomas Stewart and indeed may be from his time working in Inverness. This piece is now in the collection of the Falconer Museum Forres, Morayshire. Consequently lot 348 may be considered the only fully marked example of Elgin gold and also the only example available to private hands. It is also worth noting the relative rarity of Scottish provincial gold rings such as this. While such rings must have been a mainstay of the business of provincial silversmiths and jewellers, relatively few are known to survive.
