Note: This soup plate was commissioned as part of a service containing sixty plates, and twelve soup plates, by a 'Milford Stair' of rue Clichy No. 42 Chaussée d'Antin, costing 741 francs and 60 centimes. This mysterious buyer was likely to have been John William Henry Dalrymple, the 7th Earl of Stair (1784-1840). A discussion, and example of this service, is included in Aileen Dawson's 'French Porcelain: A Catalogue of the British Museum Collection', p. 220-221.
