Footnote
Note: Thomas Sayers (1826-1865) was a famous bare-knuckle fighter during the 1850s and 60s. He only lost one of sixteen matches, despite regularly fighting much larger men at only 5'8" and 150 pounds. His legacy is largely due to his final match against the American, John Camel Heenan (depicted in this lithograph) which was considered to be the first boxing world championship. It lasted over two hours and ended in a chaotic scene where spectators invaded the ring.
