Footnote
Note: This exceptionally large goblet seems to be an early example of communal Jacobite drinking vessels. While group consumption is often considered an early 19th century tradition it is possible that it happened earlier, from the mid-18th century onwards. Groups toasting the 'King and the cause' would have been tightly interwoven, where each member present would be sure of the others' allegiances.
