Footnote
Provenance: Yester House, Gifford, East Lothian
Note: The present lot bears similarities to an armchair illustrated in Ralph Edwards 'The Dictionary of English Furniture', Fig. 113, most notable to the shape and carved treatment of the arms and forelegs and in particular with the dolphin head feet. That chair, with its lower profile and fully upholstered back, was in the collection of Sir George Donaldson. Such feet feature on a Chairman's seat supplied about 1730 for an East India Trading Company court room in London's Leadenhall Street (Country Life, vol. 65, 1929, p242, fig. 11). Another pair of 19th century chairs of similar design but with proportions in keeping with the present lot, but with fully upholstered backs, stamped by the maker Morant & Co., were offered for sale in the United States in 2013. A matching chair to the present lot sold Christie's, South Kensington, 22 October, 2003, lot 206. It is thought the chair dates to the 19th century when a renewed interest in Rococo style brought about a revival in 18th century design.
