Footnote
Note: The birth of Prince Charles Edward Stuart was without doubt one of the most momentous occasions in the exiled Stuart Court. It not only signalled a Royal birth but the next stage in the lineage of the Stuart cause.
On news of the pregnancy Bishop Atterbury wrote to James saying "I cannot send this letter without my particular congratulations upon the affair of your Majesty's partner, which you have pleased to communicate to all of us. Tis the most acceptable news that could reach the ears of a good Englishman. May it be followed every day with such other accounts as may convince the world that Heaven has at last undertaken your cause, and is resolved to put an end to your sufferings."
