Footnote
Note:
William Morris produced wallpaper in 1887 for Balmoral Castle incorporating the VRI cypher and a flock version was later produced by Sanderons for the castle. The fabric covering the current lot bears a remarkable similarity to this design and may be a later version reproduced in fabric.
Literature: See V&A CIRC.16-1961 for a sample of the Morris design for Sandersons.
