Note: Baron Alexandre Ludvigovitch Stieglitz, a Russian philanthropist and financier became the first governor of the State Bank of the Russian Empire in 1846. After his father died he took over the family bank of Stieglitz & Co. and succeeded as the banker of the Emperor. He was deeply involved with the finance and construction of the Moscow to Saint Petersburg Railway as well as owning numerous manufacturing enterprises.
Due to his great interest in art and design he founded the Saint Petersburg Stieglitz Academy of Art and Design in 1876 open to students of both sexes. This was the most important training ground for silver design, ceramics, and stylistic studies. A number of Fabergé's leading workmasters graduated from this Academy as well as internationally acclaimed Russian artists, Ostroumova-Lebedeva and Chekhonin (works by these two artists are included in the present auction).
He received numerous awards, including the Order of St Stanislaus 3rd degree, the Order of Saint Vladimir 4th degree and the Order of Saint Anna 2nd degree.
