the arched padded back, enclosed arms and serpentine seat in green leather upholstery, raised on square tapered legs joined by stretchers, bearing an old paper label to the inside rear seat rail inscribed 'Walter Biggar, Esq./ 15 Claremont Crescent / Edinburgh'

Note: Walter Biggar was born in Edinburgh in 1787 and moved to Banff in 1821 where he married Anne Duff, daughter of an old Banffshire family. He is credited with founding the herring trade in the Baltic where his business knowledge and experience helped establish an industry that became the most significant source of wealth in north Scotland in the 19th century. An ornate Gothic style fountain was erected in Low Street, Banff in 1878 in recognition of his and his wife's accomplishments. Walter Biggar is listed as a resident of15 Claremont Crescent in Edinburgh in the 1850s.
