Note: This portrait dates circa 1785 and the sitter has been traditionally identified as Lt Governor Henry Hamilton, although this attribution is now questioned. The format of the portrait follows other known paintings by Raeburn, in particular a portrait of the Thomas Carmichael, 5th Earl of Hyndford, which uses the same pose and chair with a tree in the background for the subject, with the only notable difference being the far landscape in the background.
