the exterior of the cover finely repoussé worked with scholar-officials gathered in a vast courtyard adorned with prunus, pine, willow and various seasonal flowers, whilst their attendants, dressed as warriors, perform a show of martial arts, the four sides of the box similarly decorated with scholar-officials engaged in different leisurely pursuits, marked 'He Sheng' twice to the underside
