the interior carved through thick layers of cinnabar with two scholars seated on a river bank beneath a pine tree, looking across the river at a waterfall gushing down the craggy cliff of a mountain surmounted by a pavilion, the scene enclosed within a border of meandering peony branches, the exterior similarly carved with peonies and chrysanthemum borne on undulating stems
