comprised of a rectangular body above a cylindrical foot and below a tapered cylindrical mouth, the four sides elaborately painted with scenes from the novel featuring the young scholar Zhang Sheng, his wife Cui Yingying and her maid Hong Nian, the mouth encircled by a band of densely painted peonies and grapes above four auspicious bats on the shoulder, four further bats decorating the underside of the rectangular body, the base with a six-character seal mark
