Footnote
Provenance: A Private Scottish Collection
Note: Spanning early wares to 19th century blue and white porcelain, this collection has been thoughtfully assembled over a period of more than 30 years by a Scottish gentleman who travelled to China in the first decade of the 20th century. Before long this collector became a dedicated sinophile, immersing himself in the culture of China and becoming devoted to the Chinese people among whom he worked in a remote region of Western China. Indeed, whilst in Asia he married and his children were born. Prior to his departure in the mid 1940s he steadily grew a diverse collection of artworks as mementos of his time there, often making descriptive notes, many of which are still intact with the items.
As a marker of quality, many of the pieces collected during this period were loaned to the British museum for historical interest, and as excellent examples of their kind. Some items still bear museum loan labels. Since its return to Scotland, the collection has remained in the same family to the present day.
