Note: According to a note accompanying this lot, the dog was a favourite of the Duchess of Kent who had it made in bronze after its death. This one was given by Queen Victoria's daughter, to the German Prince Lettengen who commanded the Royal Yacht 'Victoria and Albert'. Prince Lettengen retained a Miss Learmonth as his Private Secretary. When the Prince died he bequeathed her the bronze dog stamp box. Miss Learmonth subsequently gave the dog to Mrs George MacLennan, whom she had befriended in London. Mrs MacLennan then bequeathed it on her death to her niece Janet Denholm Ovens.
