Footnote
Note: Italian marble table tops purchased by gentlemen during their Grand Tour were often given a stand later, upon return to Britain. This stand exemplifies the George IV 'French' taste popular at the time and promoted in T.King's, The Modern Style of Cabinet Work Exemplified, 1829.
Literature: A.M. Gusti, Pietre Dure, London 1992; related parquetried hardstone tables may also be found in the Palazzo Farnese, Rome (ibid.p.11) and the Villa del Poggio Imperiale in Florence.
