Footnote
The eight immortals were revered by Daoists and are believed to be figures of prosperity and longevity. The eight immortals represented eight factors in Chinese daily life: men and women, old and young, rich and poor, noble and lowly. The stories of the eight immortals were traditionally very popular; temples were dedicated to them, and they are frequently represented in Chinese art.
