Provenance: made for The Duke of Buccleuch at Drumlanrig Castle, Dumfriesshire, possibly for the Long Gallery which was re-modelled into bedroom accommodation in 1817. Other examples may still be found at the castle, some with later decorative entablatures. A version in black marble within Charles Edward Stuart's bedroom has the same bolection moulding.
The marble for this fire impressive surrounds was possibly locally sourced, being grey with white and dark grey veins and whorls.
