Footnote
Provenance: Known as The Byron Table and reputedly from the family seat of Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire.
Most recently the property of Sir John Rothenstein (1901~1992) and thence by descent. The small end frieze drawer was only relatively recently discovered in the owner's attic, hence it's darker colouration.
Sir John Knewstub Maurice Rothenstein, son of Sir William Rothenstein and lauded English art historian, was educated at Oxford, became friends of T.E. Lawrence & the Bloomsbury set, and from 1938 to 1964 served the longest term to date as Director of the Tate.
