Provenance; The Dukes of Hamilton, Hamilton Palace, Hamilton, South Lanarkshire and Lennoxlove House, Haddington, East Lothian
Note; This lot is from Lennoxlove House in East Lothian, property of the present Duke of Hamilton. The origins of the house go back to the 1300s and it is of huge importance in Scottish history due to its architecture, its owners associations with the Royal Stuarts and its furnishings and family portraits. The house only came into the ownership of the 14th Duke of Hamilton in 1946 and an extensive programme of redecoration was later initiated under aegis of John Fowler.
The present lot was moved into Lennoxlove after 1946 and was originally at Hamilton Palace, Hamilton.
The lot is sold on behalf of The Lennoxlove Trust, a registered charity set up to provide funds for the preservation of the fabric of this historic place; three tapestries towards this fund were sold in these rooms on 5th December last year.
