Footnote
Provenance: Polly Peck sale, Phillips Bond Street, 1992
The underside of one chair bears a later label with a copy of an original label bearing inscription
"June 29 1781
12 Chairs No 114 - backs fluted banister & pattra same as those making by ....
Royal Society: Girling ..."
The set was originally much larger, but eleven were stamped JG, presumably the Girling refered to in the label.
