Provenance: The Duke of Hamilton's apartments, Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh
The Dukes of Hamilton are hereditary Keepers of Holyroodhouse, and have long held apartments there. This set of chairs is understood to have always been in the Palace and bears inventory labels accordingly. The Edinburgh cabinet makers Young, Trotter and Hamilton famously furnished the apartments at Holyrood occupied by the dethroned French Princes in 1797, and the Hamiltons are known to have been clients of William Hamilton of Young, Trotter and Hamilton, who prepared an inventory of Hamilton Palace in 17??
