Footnote
Note: the inscription translates 'Success to the voyage of the Boeken Roode'. The Boeken Roode was built in 1729 in Amsterdam for the Admiralty of that city. She was constructed by Thomas Davies, an English shipbuilder who came from Portsmouth and who also built ships for the German Emperor. In 1729 she was built as a 52 gun ship, but was refitted in 1747 with her armament reduced to 44 guns, and this glass therefore dates to after 1747.
The Armorial engraving to the reverse is the Arms of Roos of Amsterdam and the goblet may, therefore, be to commemorate Dirk Roos's promotion to Rear Admiral in 1748.
