Provenance: Sir Richard Bempde Johnstone, Bart., bookplate
Note: Defoe's history, first published in 1709, derives from his period of service as a secret government agent in Scotland (1706-08), where he worked for Harley and Godolphin with the party sympathetic to union. This edition was first published in 1786, but was re-issued in 1787 with the addition of John Louis De Lolme's essay on the probability of a union with Ireland. A fine copy.
