Note:Following the proclamation of King William III, Viscount Dundee raised a group of Highland troops loyal to the deposed King James II. A body of government troops under General Hugh Mackay was sent to put down the rebellion. On the 27th July 1689 at the head of the narrow gorge of Killiecrankie the Highlanders fell upon King William's men and annihilated them. In the ensuing rout, Donald McBean, a government soldier, was pursued by the Jacobites to the edge of the gorge, forcing him to make his brave leap to freedom.
