A photograph of Beatrix Potter (1866–1943), taken by her father, Rupert Potter (1832–1914) on 3 October 1897, shows the writer with her terrier dog seated on an identical chair to the current lot (V&A, E.765-2005). The photograph was taken at Lingholm, an estate on the north-west shore of Derwentwater, near Keswick, designed by Alfred Waterhouse in 1873. Potter and her family spent their summer holidays at Lingholm, whose gardens and surrounding landscape provided an important source of inspiration for her work. The contents of Lingholm were subsequently dispersed by Lyon & Turnbull on 22 October 2013.
