Tim Stead, born in Cheshire in 1952, was a sculptor and furniture maker whose practice centred on the use of natural materials. He studied sculpture at Nottingham Trent Polytechnic and the Glasgow School of Art, developing a lifelong commitment to integrating sculptural and functional forms. His notable commissions included the furnishing of Café Gandolfi in Glasgow (1979), a throne for Pope John Paul II’s visit to Scotland (1982), furniture for St John’s Chapel, Aberdeen (1989), and a reconstruction of Skara Brae (1990). His final project, the Millennium Clock Tower (1999), was a collaborative work now permanently displayed at National Museums Scotland.
